Both woodcut and etching are print processes that create a multiple image, each a hand-printed original work. In a woodcut, lines and shapes are carved into a wood block. When ink is rolled over the surface and printed, the areas that have been carved away remain the color of the paper or, in color woodcuts, the color printed from previous blocks. The medium is bold and often stark. In an etching, lines carved or bitten into a plate are filled with ink and printed onto dampened paper. The medium allows for subtleties of expression and a wide range of light and dark. |
